First of all, I want to give a shoutout to Duda Diesel (the supplier of this item) because they are wonderful to work with. They initially sent the wrong item by accident, but shipped out a replacement by priority mail so it would get delivered Saturday just in time for my birthday brew session. For the item itself, it will cool your wort as quickly as it can flow. It’s truly amazing to me that boiling liquid can travel 10 inches at a fast rate and come out the other side 70F, but it just works. I have only used it once so far, but it taught me a few things:1. Just once was enough to convince me that I needed a pump to make things easier, so I have since purchased aChugger Stainless Steel Brewing Pump Center Inlet (Comparable to March 809-SS-HS-C). I’m looking forward to the next brew day with this item. Gravity feeding may work for most, but I have a cheap stainless conical that is quite tall, which means that I had to lift a pot full of nearly 6 gallons of boiling hot wort up above my head on to an unsteady surface to get it to cascade down out of the pot, through the chiller, and down again in to the fermenter. Never again.2. For cleaning: In the absence of a pump, get a sink or hose adapter barb adapter so you can hook up your tubing to some good water pressure. Blast it through the in port first, then connect it to the out port and blast it again, and repeat as necessary. After you are done, drain it as well as you can and bake it in the oven at 300 or so for an hour to dry it out. For one, this will char any sludge left in it, and for another it will dry it out completely so it won’t get musty inside.3. If you are going to get silicone tubing (my preference over thermoplastic), then be sure to get the thicker walled stuff. Yes, it’s $10 more expensive, but the thin walled stuff just collapses in on itself and kinks. Very frustrating.White Silicone Rubber Tubing, Food Grade4. This will only cool your wort to the temperature of the counterflowing water. So, if you have very warm water, consider a cheap immersion chiller that you can stick in a bucket of ice to pre-chill the hose water before it enters this chiller. All that said, I’m coming from no-chilling, so being done in 5 minutes after boil is a revelation. That also means I can’t compare to counterflows or immersions, but I can still highly recommend this as effective.
